Exciting science experiments as seen on TV with Steve Spangler

Science Experiments at Steve Spangler Science – Many of these experiments have video clips of Steve Spangler on the news doing his experiments in the studio.  The videos are fun to watch and fun to do.  You must watch this video of the Diet Coke and Mento Super Soda Dispenser 3000 (click on the “video” tab about half way down the page).  What a blast!

How to encourage (& not kill) the joy in learning for our kids

Cultivating the unschooling mindset. Don’t let the unschooling title scare you, there are great things to think about here.  Maybe this is my own issue, but I can so relate to the description of “learning” just enough to get an “A” on the test and to enjoy the (fleeting) accolades which follow, all the while disliking school and longing to be out.  It goes without saying that I really learned nothing except to look to others and the grades on my report card to make me feel good about me.  Hopefully my children will be spared from the same fate.

How to build cardboard castles, pirate ships, trains & more from refrigerator boxes

Mr. McGroovy’s How To – This is a site which sells kits to build cardboard castles, pirate ships, thrones, fire engines, trains, pyramids and more.  I include it because you can preview the plans for free. It seems to me the kits would be nice to purchase, but not necessary to complete the project.  You decide.

Make your own alphabet handwriting book or decorate a room

Jan Brett Alphabet – These would be a great reference guide for any handwriting curriculum.  The illustrations are wonderful.  You could even print them on cardstock (and frame them?!) and decorate a room, they’re that sweet.  Or hang them on the wall of your schooling room.  Choose from traditional manuscript, cursive manuscript and modern manuscript.

    A complete K-8 math curriculum

Mathematics Enhancement Programme.  We use this curriculum and I am very impressed with it.  Students learn not only the “how” of math, but the “why” of math.  It’s a British curriculum so you will have to supplement with US standard weights & measures, etc.  Downloading requires a password, but simply follow the instructions to request a password and let them know you are a homeschooler; I had no problem getting a password.
