150+ books we’ve read & how we like them

While I’m pretty eclectic in my approach to homeschooling, I tend toward literature-based learning as much as possible.  It’s amazing how much we learn from a great book, written by a passionate author.

When I go to the library, I pull books from every section, including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, picture books, audio books and whatever else I can find that looks interesting before my 2 year old starts getting just a little too loud and it’s time to leave. :)

When we first started homeschooling, my oldest kiddos were 6 & 4.  I wanted to keep track of the books we were reading, so I put together a little form on Zoho.  I actually forgot about it for a while so it’s missing a pretty big chunk of books we’ve read recently, but there are still over 150 there.  You’ll find the books sorted by our rating (1 to 5 stars, 5 stars being the highest).  A post over at Simple Mom made me think others might find it useful.  Click here to see our complete list.  Enjoy!

What To Do About Alice?

What To Do About Alice? is about “how Alice Roosevelt broke the rules, charmed the world, and drove her father teddy crazy!“  It’s a delightful read with great humor, clever writing and wonderful illustrations.

This book also has LOTS of potential for rabbit-trailing (as I like to call it).  Here are some things to discuss and explore while you’re reading:

  • interesting typography which makes the words come alive
  • great descriptive words (vocabulary & spelling)
  • very fun illustrations with good use of color (art appreciation)
  • explanation of the presidential process
  • several references to various historical events
  • issues about character, image, manners, etc.
  • much more…just be creative!

My favorite quote which sums things up nicely:

Alice Lee Roosevelt was hungry to go places, meet people, do things.  Father called it ‘running riot.’  Alice called it ‘eating up the world.’”

In fact, I’ve decided to steal the phrase “eating up the world” to describe what I hope our homeschool is all about!
